‘Colin’ All Men:  ‘Don’ a Sport Coat This Summer

If you’re a movie maven then you know the movie “Miami Vice” is scheduled for release this summer.  Yes, the 1980’s ground-breaking TV drama that featured fashion, color and music, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, has been reset to the present.  Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx play vice detectives James Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, who take on the world of drugs, prostitution and firearms crimes in South Florida – all whilst searing the viewers with their alluring attire.

Who can forget the outrageous outfits worn by the two stars:  dramatic, vibrant and slick sport coats – with sleeves rolled up to the elbows - and T-shirts worn with light colored pants; double-breasted jackets worn with barely buttoned shirts…

Times and fashions have changed since then.  The color craze came to a close and ushered in a decade of debauchery:  duds were dye deprived.  A nation, as if in mourning over the loss of morality and disgust over corrupt corporate conduct, bore black outfits designed by burned-out designers.  Finally at the turn of the century, designers and devotees alike came to their visual senses and incorporated color into their credo once again.  Somehow the summer of 2006 has much in common with the summer of 1986.  The images of the original “Miami Vice” are equally indelible and influential 20 summers later.

This year’s ‘boys of summer’ are propositioned by page after page of magazine advertising and editorial content to put on a sport jacket with just about anything else.  Retailers are rallying behind the idea, styling mannequins in sport coat attire with rock-n-roll themed T-shirts and jeans, while somehow featuring the color of the season:  white.

Of course, few men want to look like a member of the trend-of-the-month club.  So why is there a momentum motivating men to wear sport coats?  Sport coats are strong and sexy, creating strapping shoulder lines, and slimming the body.   Change into a sport coat and convey confidence, calmness, and coolness.  Between notch, mandarin or peak lapels, constructed, unlined or half-lined, solid, texture or printed, button stances, fabrics, and colors, there are copious choices available to characterize a signature appearance with a sport coat.

Long after “Miami Vice” and its related fashion fads fade one more time, sport coats will carry on as a means for men to address their own personal style.
